Paul Kariya was born in 1974 in North Vancouver, BC. He stands 5'10" and weight 180 lbs. He was drafted fourth overall in 1993 by the Anaheim Mighty Ducks. By the end of the shortened 1994-95 season, Kariya led all NHL rookies in goals and shots and was an All-Rookie Team forward. In 1995-96 he won the Lady Byng Trophy. In 1996-97, Paul was named captain and led the team and won his second Lady Byng Trophy. He was also the runner-up to the Hart Trophy (league MVP).
At the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer, Paul scored seven points in eight games and won a silver medal. Two months later, Paul helped Canada win its first World Championships gold medal in 33 years. In February 1998, Paul was selected to represent his country at the Winter Olympics but missed the tournament with a concussion.
