Aaron's Hockey Highlights
Hockey is a game in which two opposing teams attempt to drive a puck through the goal of the opponent by means of sticks that are curved or hooked at one end. A rough, action-packed game, ice hockey is considered one of the fastest of all sports. It is played in about 30 countries and is watched worldwide. Ice hockey is especially popular in Canada, where the modern game developed.
Birth of the NHL
On November 22, 1917 the NHA (National Hockey Association) owners met at the Windsor Hotel to settle problems of the inner-league fighting, mainly caused by the Toronto owner Eddie Livingstone. Since they did not want Livingstone in their league the NHA owners created a new league, the NHL, and left Livingstone by himself. The NHL awarded franchises to the Ottawa Senators, Montreal Canadiens, Toronto, and Montreal Wanderers. Quebec was also granted a franchise but the club owners chose not to play that first year.
A sentimental era of the NHL was from 1942 to 1967, the years of The Original Six. For over a quarter of a century, six teams dueled one another year in and year out, developing rivalries that have persisted for another thirty years. Those teams included the Montreal Canadiens, the New York Rangers, the Detroit Red Wings, the Boston Bruins, the Chicago Blackhawks, and the Toronto Maple Leafs. Today the NHL has over 30 teams.
