Aaron's Sports History Highlights
Formula racing, or single-seat automobile racing, in which the designs of the cars are strictly regulated by the FIA. These specially designed racecars, featuring front and rear wings that press the cars to the pavement, can consistently reach speeds of over 320 km/h (200 mph). Designed for road racing, F1 cars can accelerate and brake quickly.
An award called the World Championship of Drivers was established in 1950, with the winner being determined from the F1 racing results each year. In 1958 an F1 Constructors' Championship was established to rival the World Manufacturers' Championship, a competition held in sports-car racing (see below). These championships are based on race results, but reward the companies that build racecars, rather than rewarding drivers.
