Ayrton Senna (1960-1994), was born in São Paulo, Brazil. Senna was one of the most celebrated Brazilian athletes of the 20th century, who won the World Grand Prix Formula One championship three times (1988, 1990, 1991).
He began racing karts (small motorized vehicles) in Brazil in 1973, and his career advanced rapidly. He won a South American kart championship in 1977. He joined the Formula One racing circuit in 1984. His best finish that year was third place at the British Grand Prix at Brands Hatch, near London. He continued to improve, and in 1988 he won the World Grand Prix Formula One championship, which he also won in 1990 and 1991.
During his career Senna developed intense rivalries with several other racers, including Alain Prost of France and Nigel Mansell of Britain. An aggressive driver, Senna was often criticized for sacrificing race safety in the interest of achieving higher speeds. In the third race of the 1994 season, Senna died in a crash at the Grand Prix of San Marino in Imola, Italy. His death, one of several serious accidents that year in Formula One racing, prompted safety-related changes in the design of Formula One automobiles.
