Arie Luyendyk (1953 - ) was born in Sommelsdyk, Holland. He is best known for his sensational 1990 and 1997 Indianapolis 500 victories, but throughout his distinguished career he has experienced success in many different forms of racing. Arie won the 12 Hours of Sebring in 1989 and backed up his sports car racing credentials with a popular victory in the 1998 24 Hours of Daytona.
In 1990 Arie scored his first IndyCar win at the biggest race in the world! During the 500, Arie ran a clever race. He laid back while Emerson Fittipaldi set a ferocious pace up front, blistering his tires in the process. Arie saved his tires and had enough race car left to run down Bobby Rahal for the lead on Lap 168. Arie's pace of 185.981 mph was the fastest winning average speed in Indianapolis 500 history.
In 1992 he was selected as one of People Magazine's '50 Most Beautiful People of the Year'. In 1997 he won the pole position for the 500.
